Why do you Want to Be a Youth Activities Counselor?
So before we begin, before I get into any detail about what you do on the job, your work schedule, the pay, your privileges, what your life will be like (and I will definitely discuss each each of these in their own subtopic later on), let me ask you:
Why do you Want to be a Youth Activities Counselor?
This is often a very good test to determine how long you'll actually be staying with us as a Counselor. It's no secret that most people only try it out once and decide that it's not for them, and those that do end up staying for over a year like myself often have the same reasons for it. As a trainer and advisor for new hires I can often figure out what their career path with Disney Cruise Lines will be based on their reasons for wanting to be there.
So....take a few minutes. Write down a list! Go on! It can be as long or as short as you want. And your reasons don't even have to be "Good" reasons, just everything that makes you really want this job and why having this job will help you meet those needs. Take your time, I'll wait.

All finished? Good.
I want you to keep that list with you as you read through this blog, and even when you're finally on the ship. This makes sure that you're grounded and is proof of what you're feeling right now; the reasons why you chose to do this in the first place and what is important to you.
If at any point, based on what you read here or what you end up finding out on the job doesn't make those reasons quite work anymore... then maybe it's time you rethink doing this!
Remember: This isn't a summer job or something you can easily get away from or leave when you find out it isn't right for you. It's a huge commitment of your life and time away from friends and family. I've seen SO many Youth Activities Counselors come and go because they ended up being very disappointed about things they didn't know until they got there. Once you're on board, this job and the ship end up being your life. So MAKE SURE you know why you really want it!
Still with me?
Keep that list handy, and let's move on!
